Heavy rains inundate Mangaluru: Two dead, extensive damage reported

Life in this coastal district came to a halt, as the early monsoon hit Dakshina Kannada, with the rains pouring down. In its Weather Warning Bulletin for the week, the National Weather Forecasting Centre has predicted ‘heavy to very heavy’ rain from May 29 to June 2, in Kerala and Coastal-Karnataka region; with wind speeds from 40-50kmph and has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Karnataka polls: Why coastal districts blew away the political deck of Congress

Tagged as a Hindutva lab and a communal hotbed, in 2013 the coastal districts proved the critics wrong by thrusting Congress to power. But come 2018 polls, the same districts sprung surprise again. At the foothills of Western Ghats in Moodabidri, a host of ordinary-looking plants and trees welcome the guests to ‘Sammilan Shetty’s Butterfly Park’. Sammilan Shetty founded the park in 2011 with the aim to create a paradise for the dwindling beauties. As many as 148 different species of butterflies has been spotted in his park so far.

Black-magic continues to haunt Karnataka polls; Rs 32 lakh owl sacrifice averted

Pegged at the cost of Rs. 32 lakh, an innocent owl was on the verge of being a sacrificial object on-behest of a political aspirant, if not for the timely intervention by the Kollegal Regional Forest officer (RFO). In the last two-months, around Chamarajanagara district, the forest officials have booked seven cases of poaching and arrested at-least four-people in this connection. In their statement, the arrested admitted to the officials that they were procuring the animals on behest of unknown middlemen for ‘Vamachara’ or Black magic practitioners to ensure candidates victory.
